Beauty trends in the US have changed dramatically in the last 10 years. I remember browsing my fashion magazines at home and usually Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford (Revlon), or Nicky Taylor and Christie Brinkley for (Cover Girl) where starring in most of the cosmetic ads. You would not find a Hispanic top model among these. At least I do not remember one.
Today it’s easy to notice that is changed. The perception of beauty has widened. More ethnic models star in mainstream ads. Common practice for many beauty brands nowadays. And that of course includes Hispanic women/models. It is very common to find actress Eva Longoria or Penelope Cruz in L’oreal beauty ads or Eva Mendez for Revlon. Unilever’s Dove brand in their Campaign for Real Beauty also includes Hispanic “real” women.
Another beauty trend is to get influenced by the Hispanic culture. OPI Nails for example launched a color collection called “Mexico” with great nail enamel color hues inspired by Mexico’s rich pottery, architectural wall colors, traditional costumes, nature and food. Needless to say they named the colors with labels like “Opi por favor”, “Cozu-melted in the Sun”, “Will You Mari-achi Me?” or “You Rock-apulco Red” which I find very original and fun.
