Received in a recent Email:
“Great chat at 37signals’ Fireside Chat. Do you have any book recommendations for someone new to GD. I would really like to have a good foundation in the ‘craft’.”?
Great question.
Certainly, it’s not possible to become a great craftsperson in graphic design purely through book study. Yet, there are a few essential basics that I feel should be in every designer’s library. Here are four that easily came to mind, picked from our own library:

Graphic Design Manual: Principles and Practice - Armin Hofmann

Universal Principles of Design - Lidwell, Holden, Butler

Typographic Design: Form and Communication - Carter, Day, Meggs

Grid Systems in Graphic Design - Josef Muller-Brockmann
